The Grand Trip Pt.10, The cranes

This area, on opposite side to Pripyat, across Janow lagoon, was a port. Back then the lagoon was connected to the Pripyat river and this was a convenient spot for the ships to stop. After the accident a dam was built to separate the lagoon from the river, in order to contain the contaminated water. Now the cranes stand out of place, among the trees and tall grass, like giant metal beach crabs.

The last days of action for the crabs consisted of shovelling contaminated sand from trucks to barges (or maybe vice-versa…). As a result, the radiation levels in the area are significantly higher than normal, especially near the buckets. Now the giant feet are sunken so deep in grass and dirt you cant even see the tracks.

With all the people gone another form of life now occupies the operators booth. A shrub, or a small tree somehow managed to grow there.

A floating crane, now half sunk, became a good hang out spot for a colony of birds. Unfortunately they sensed us as we ware approaching and almost all flew away.
